Born: 24th May 1894.  Died: 1972

Story

William was baptised in Kippax on 9th October 1894, and was the son of Thomas Wood (1874-1932) and Elizabeth Pickard (1876-1949).  William and his sister Mary Jane (pictured below) initially lived on Kippax High Street, before they moved briefly to 8 York Street, Castleford in 1911, where William was a farm labourer.

The family moved back to Kippax High Street before the War, and William had started work as a Policeman when he enlisted.  He married Elsie Heckford in Hull in 1915, and had a son Frederick in 1916, who was also born in Hull.  William was shot in the back during the war in August 1916, and he was discharged as physically unfit, after failing to sufficiently recover.  The injury also ended his Police career.  He moved back to Leeds, and he had a daughter Elsie in 1919, and then a second son Harold in 1923.  By 1939, William was living at 2 Proctor’s Place, Leeds, where he was working as a Foreman for a leather company.  He passed away at the age of 77.
