Story
William was one of eight children born to George Revis (1854-1938) and Elizabeth Anson (1858-1928), pictured below left. William’s father was a joiner, and then worked repairing coal tubs, and William also worked as a coal tub repairer. William’s grandparents were Andrew Wilton Revis (1820-1883) and Sarah Carbut (1824-1886) (pictured below right). Andrew ran the Royal Oak in Kippax, and in 1867 was one of 26 original members who formed the Kippax Cooperative Society.


William lived at 14 West View, Robinson Lane. He was 5 ft 9½ inches tall and enlisted on 22nd July 1916. He was called up on 28th April 1918, and after training, he landed in L’Havre on 24th November 1918. His Army papers describe him as ‘Clean, sober, and intelligent,’ and he only had one disciplinary note against his name, when on 21st December 1918 he was found to be deficient of iron rations. William was discharged from the Army after suffering with various physical ailments including psoriasis. After the War, William married Annie Rickhuss on 15th September 1922 in Kippax. By 1939, he was living in Castleford, continuing to work repairing coal tubs. He passed away at the age of 65.
