Private William Waring Street
Born: 13th May 1894. Died: 1973.
Story
William was born in Kippax, and lived on the High Street. He was a Pony Driver at the Colliery before the War, and was the son of Matthew Street (1863-1907) and Martha Waring (1865-1947). He was mentioned as having enlisted in the press on 18th August 1915, and may have joined the Army Service Corps, but it is not known for certain. After the War, he continued to live on the High Street, until moving to 33 Cardigan Terrace, Burley, Leeds where he met and married Lottie Stead (21st June 1902 – 1982) on 14th July 1928. The couple had twins, Ivy and Kathleen on 18th December 1928, and Barbara on 21st May 1935. After marrying, they moved to 239 and then 241 Selby Road, Whitkirk, and both worked as pressers for a tailor. The family later moved to Barnet, where William passed away at the age of 79.
Gunner Thomas Henry Sugden

Story
Thomas was not related to the Ernest Sugden who was killed in the War, although Thomas did have a younger brother called Ernest. Thomas was the son of Thomas Sugden and Mary Booth. He was a Coal miner, working at Ledston Luck Colliery before the War, and lived on Church Lane, before moving to Fenton Square, High Street, Kippax. Thomas married Lily Howson on 6th November 1915, and they had a daughter Doris five days later. Thomas enlisted on 19th February 1916, but wasn’t posted until 3rd June 1918. Thomas was 5 ft 5 inches tall and immediately contracted scabies whilst training at Pontefract, and was hospitalised for three days on 4th June 1918. On 6th October 1918, he caught influenza and was hospitalised until 17th October 1918. Thomas was discharged from the Army as surplus to military requirements on 14th December 1918. After the War, Thomas continued to work as a Coal Hewer, and lived at 55 Leeds Road. His mother-in-law Mary Jane Howson (née Perry) also lived with them. She passed away in 1962 at the age of 86. Thomas passed away at the age of 85.
