Northumberland Fusiliers, 1st / 7th Battalion, Service no. 7/5570
Story
William was born on the 10th March 1896, the son of Fred Adams (1872-1944) and Florence Stephenson (1874-1939). He enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers on 24th May 1916 under Service no. 291693, joining the 13th Battalion, but was soon transferred. William was wounded in June 1917 and was discharged from the Army on the 14th July 1917.
After the War, William married Dora Robinson on 6th July 1921 in Allerton Bywater. William was living at 36 New Street, Kippax, and Dora at 14 Hudson’s Buildings, Allerton Bywater. Shortly after, on 23rd September 1921, William’s puppy attacked a baby, and the Court ordered it to be destroyed (below):

William and Dora lived on Cross Hill, and ran a Do It Yourself shop and Greengrocers in the building, until they sold it on 30th April 1927. The building later became better known as Butterfield’s Greengrocers, the Gas Shop and the old Library (below):

William was also friends with Francis Edwards, who was killed during the war and is listed on the Kippax Memorial. He wrote the announcement (bottom left) on the first anniversary of his friend’s death.

William and Dora had a son, John Robinson Adams on the 16th August 1926. William passed away in 1963, aged 67.
