Story
Thirty years-old William Archibald Taylor, son of Henry Taylor, married Mary Robinson in Kippax on 22nd January 1919, and both were living in Kippax at the time. Under his occupation, William stated he was a private in the Canadian Infantry. His stay in Kippax was short, and little is known about him.
The 24th Battalion (Victoria Rifles) belonged to the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. It was authorized on 7th November 1914 and embarked for Great Britain on 11 May 1915, arriving in France on 16 September 1915, where it fought as part of the 5th Infantry Brigade, 2nd Canadian Division in France and Flanders, including Mount Kemmel, St Eloi, Flers de Courcelette, Thiepval and Ancre heights. In April 1917 they seized Vimy Ridge during the Battle of Arras, and fought in the Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele, pictured below). The 24th Battalion also took part in the Allied counter-offensive in Amiens and were present at the breaching of the Hindenburg Line and the crossing of the Canal du Nord.
