Royal Flying Corps, Labour Corps, Service no. 29355
Born: 1st January 1886. Died: 1958.
Story
Walter Varley was one of eleven children born to John Varley (1850-1921) and Zillah Cockerham (1855-1927). He was baptised in Kippax on 7th December 1886, and brought up at Ashfield Terrace, Station Road. He followed his father’s profession, and was an engine driver at the colliery. Walter married Sarah Elizabeth Moore in Leeds in 1909, and enlisted early in the War, as his name is noted in an article printed 18th August 1915, as having already signed up to the colours. He looks to have joined the Royal Flying Corps, and given his profession, he would have worked as a fitter and mechanic on the airplanes.
After the War, he remained in Kippax, moving to 217 Westfield Lane. He still worked in the Colliery, but was now a Colliery Pipe Fitter. During the Second World War, it was noted that he had Post War Credits. Walter passed away at the age of 72.
