Royal Engineers, Service no. 120883
Born: 27th January 1878. Died: 1965
Story
Walter was baptised in Kippax on 10th March 1878, and was the first child of the Kippax House Builder, William Green and his wife Annie Elizabeth Booker. They built and lived at Kippax Hall. Walter married Kathleen Elizabeth Rheeder in 1908, and in 1911, the couple were living in Kippax Hall, along with Kathleen’s mother, Catherine. Walter had followed his father’s profession and was a house joiner in the family business. His wife, Kathleen, passed away aged 25 in 1913, and Walter attested on 1st December 1915, and joined up with the Royal Engineers on 12th January 1916. He was almost 38 years-old, and was 5ft 9¼ inches tall. Walter’s younger brother Kennard also enlisted in the Royal Engineers, and was wounded and taken prisoner. Their father William was a Special Constable during the First World War.
Walter received one day’s punishment at Chetham on the 1st April 1916, for being “unsteady in the ranks on Drill Parade,” however he was classed as a superior joiner, and served at home and in France. Walter was discharged on 13th March 1919, and had barely returned to Kippax Hall, when his mother-in-law, Catherine, passed away on 17th March 1919, aged 59. Walter married Evelyn Hill in 1926, and the couple had a daughter, Sheila Mary Green on 30th December 1928. By 1939, the family were living at no.5 Kippax Hall, and Walter’s profession was Builder and Contractor. In the Second World War, Walter again followed his father’s lead, and was a Special Constable. He passed away at the age of 87.
