Private Samuel Silverwood

Born: 26th December 1899.  Died: 21st March 1958.

Story

Samuel was baptised in Kippax on 7th February 1900.  He was the son of Samuel Robinson Silverwood (1862-1922) and Mary Monks (1867-1918).  His older brother James also served in the Royal Medical Corp during the War, but his father paid £5 to secure his early release.  Samuel only enlisted towards the end of the War.  The family lived on Mount Pleasant, Kippax (pictured below). After the War, Samuel married Dorothy Burton in 1920 in Surrey, but they returned to 23 Mount Pleasant, and had a daughter Gwendoline on 12th February 1921.  Samuel was a Colliery Ripper below ground, and passed away whilst living at 26 Mount Pleasant.  He was buried in Kippax on 26th March 1958, aged 58.  His widow Dorothy was born on 21st June 1897, and passed away on 22nd September 1966.  Their daughter Gwendoline married Reginald Houston in 1941, and had a son, John in 1946.  Gwendoline contracted multiple sclerosis in later life, and passed away in Doncaster at the age of 49.
