Driver Samuel Hollis

Royal Field Artillery, Service no. 1049420

Born: 17th June 1893.  Died: 1969

Story

Samuel was baptised in Kippax on 9th July 1893, and was the son of Henry James Hollis and Hannah Bedford.  The family lived on Robinson Lane, but by 1911 had moved to 29 Remmington Road, Wombwell, where Samuel was working as an Engine Driver at the colliery.  Although old enough, it is not certain whether Samuel enlisted during the War.  It is known he signed up for the Royal Field Artillery after the War, on 6th April 1921, as he was approaching 29 years of age.  He married quite late to Christobel Harris (née Beard) in 1934, and re-enlisted again for service during the Second World War on 5th April 1940.  He lived at 64 Green Lane, Doncaster and was a colliery hewer, before he passed away at the age of 77.
