Gunner Samuel Bailey Evans

Royal Field Artillery, 79th Brigade, Service no. 20878

Killed in action 11th December 1915 in Flanders, Belgium, aged 26

Story

Born 26th March 1889 in Tingley, Morley, Samuel was the son of Squire Bailey and Martha Jane Evans.  He married Elizabeth Handley, who was from Kippax on 15th April 1911 in Woodkirk, and they had a son Thomas who was born 23rd September 1915.  Samuel’s Brigade had been training in Winchester in May 1915, and had been selected for Home Defence duties, until this decision was reversed, and they proceeded to France in July 1915, being based near St Omer.  Whilst Samuel was on leave, the new family were photographed together, before Samuel returned to the front lines at Ypres and was killed just weeks later.  Elizabeth re-married 13th November 1920 in Woodkirk to Thomas Baldwin who was a witness at her marriage to Samuel.
