Private Robert James Guy

2nd Reserve Cavalry Regiment, Service no. 82255

Born: 20th July 1895.  Died: 1986

Story

Robert was baptised in Allerton Bywater on 3rd September 1895.  He was the son of Samuel Guy and Jane Thompson who were originally from Ireland.  In 1911, Robert was living with his parents at 11 School Street, Bowers Row, and was working as a Colliery Labourer.  Robert enlisted into the Army on 11th December 1915.

2nd Reserve Regiment of Cavalry

The regiment was formed in August 1914 at Aldershot.  It trained men for the 2nd Dragoon Guards, 6th Dragoons, Essex Yeomanry and the Lothians and Border Horse, until it was absorbed into the new 4th Reserve Regiment early in 1917.  It is rare to see a cavalry reserve unit being mentioned in a man’s medal records, even if the man had trained with them, but it does with Robert, and he also quoted the same details on his marriage certificate on 10th August 1918 in Kippax.  He married Munitions Worker, Maggie Jane Houston, who was from another Irish family.

Robert left the Army on 17th January 1919, and they moved to 5 Helena Street.  In 1939, after having a son Leonard, the family moved to 35 Thwaite Gate, Leeds, where Robert worked as a Newsagent.  Robert passed away in Reading, at the age of 91.
