Private Reginald Bailey

Royal Engineers, Service no. 20247

Story

Reginald Bailey was born 14th August 1881 in Hunslet, the son of William and Blanche Bailey.  His Army papers show a claim to have married Margaret Davidson in Kippax on 26th August 1904, although this appears questionable.  However they had four children together by 1913.  Before the War, Reginald worked for the Micklefield Coal and Lime Company (below), and he enlisted with the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry on 20th August 1917.  Reginald was 5 ft 7 inches, and served at home until 2nd December 1917, when he was posted overseas.  On 12th March 1918, Reginald was injured in action, and was hospitalised in Chelsea.  He was discharged from the Army on 30th July 1918 as being unfit to serve, and stated his intention was to become a storekeeper after the war.  Instead, Reginald and his family moved to Lancaster.  In 1939, Reginald was listed as a disabled Iron and Steel Moulder.  He passed away in 1972, aged 91.  One of his sons, George Henry Bailey, who was born Christmas Day 1907, enlisted on the 4th August 1927, into the Royal Airforce, under Service no. 506500.
