Royal Engineers, Service no. 128751

Born: 5th August 1892.  Died: 1960

Story

Percy was born in Allerton Bywater, and was baptised on 16th October 1892.  He was the son of John William Robinson and Jannett Bullough.  By 1911, he was working as an Apprentice Mechanic at the Colliery, whilst living with his parents at Bickerdike Place.  Percy married Munitions Worker Ida Atkinson in Kippax on 25th March 1918 (below), the certificate shows Percy was a Corporal in the Pioneer Battalion of the Royal Engineers.

Pioneer battalions were created in 1914 to provide the Royal Engineers with skilled labour and to relieve the infantry from some of its non-combatant duties. Pioneers became the work horses of the Expeditionary Forces, creating bridges over rivers, and walkways over fields of mud.  A battalion of pioneers are pictured below in 1916.

After the War, Percy and Ida lived at 4 Tatefield Mount, Kippax.  Percy was a Colliery Washer Fitter, and the couple had three daughters: Mary in 1920, Eva on 2nd April 1926, and Betty in 1928.  Percy passed away at the age of 67.
