Born: 1922. Son of William Buxton and Jane Ann Charlton
Died: 14th November 1942, aged 20
Story
Oliver’s father William was born in Kippax in 1889, and married Jane Ann Charlton in Kippax on 4th May 1920. Oliver had an older brother James, and a younger sister Pauline.
Oliver served in the Ordnance Corps during the War, which was mainly responsible for supplying soldiers with weapons and ammunition, but they also worked on bomb disposals. Oliver was based in the Middle East during the War, and was reported to be missing in combat. However, on the 6th November 1942, it was reported by the Red Cross that Oliver had broadcast a message to his parents from Rome saying he was fit and well, and they weren’t to worry. A little later on 20th November, the Red Cross informed his parents that Oliver was now stated to be a prisoner of war in Italy. In fact, he had died 6 days earlier in captivity. Oliver is listed on the Alamein Memorial, Egypt (below), Column 84.
