Killed in action: 13th June 1944, aged 21

Story

Norman was the son of Herbert Varley (1892-1924) and Hilda Green (1893-1985).  Herbert was living at 3 Ashfield Terrace when they married in Kippax on 17th June 1922, and Hilda was the daughter of the builder William Green, so they moved to 1 The Hall, as Kippax Hall was built and owned by William Green.  Herbert died when his only child Norman was just two years-old.

Norman was posted missing in June 1944 whilst on air operations, and wasn’t confirmed as deceased until November.  Norman was buried overseas at the Forenville Military Cemetery, France, Row H. Grave 1A, alongside other Airmen killed at the same time.

The inscription on Norman’s grave reads: “He lives in Fame Though not in Life.”
