Story
Maggie Barker was born 12th December 1899 in Ingleton. She was the daughter of John and Barker and Betsy Bradshaw. John was also born at Ingleton and Betsy at Burton-in-Lonsdale, Yorkshire.
Maggie, who had moved to Ledston Luck, was fatally injured in the munitions factory explosion at Barnbow, Leeds, on the 5th December 1916. She died on 18th December 1916 at Leeds General Infirmary, the cause of death being “shock from injuries to vital organs caused accidentally by an explosion at a shell factory.” Maggie was buried at Ingleton Cemetery on the 23 December 1916. Maggie Barker Avenue on the old Barnbow site is now named in her honour.
The Five Sisters’ Window in York Minster is dedicated as a war memorial to the women of the British Empire who lost their lives, 1914-1918. Maggie is commemorated by name and service in St Nicholas’ Chapel in the North Transept of the Minster
