Born: 2nd November 1918
Story
Leonard’s parents were Thomas Winn (1885-1931) and Florence Turnpenny (1885-1958) who married in Kippax on 17th February 1906. The family lived at 8 Tatefield Place, and Leonard worked as a Tailor’s Vest Fitter before the War, supporting his widowed mother. He was an extremely accomplished football player, playing for Kippax School, Ledston Luck, Kippax Utd and Burton’s Sports, amassing 6 miniature cups and two medals. Before the War Kippax Utd had several players who joined Arsenal, and Leonard’s teammate, Leonard Francis Shackleton (1922-2000) also played for England.
In 1941, after a period of leave Leonard returned to service in Iceland, and then learnt of the death of his girlfriend Phyllis Davis of Great Preston a few days later. Leonard served with the West Yorkshire Regiment and the Fusiliers (Black Cats).
Returning home, Leonard married Jean Marguerite Holmes in 1946, and they moved to 16 Tatefield Place, and had three sons: Michael, Gerald and David. Leonard passed away on 21st November 1989, just after his 71st birthday, and his wife Jean in 2000.
Leonard’s family continue to remember him, and have created a display to pay tribute to his service:
