Gunner Lawrence Veitch

Royal Garrison Artillery, Service no. 67668

Born: 9th December 1894.  Died: 11th April 1958.

Story

Lawrence was the son of Joseph Gibson Veitch (1861-1936), who was headmaster at Kippax Infants School, and the brother of Corporal Reginald William Veitch.  In 1911, Lawrence was a Bank Clerk, and he enlisted on the 14th November 1915.  He was 5 ft 6 inches tall, and had a scar on his right cheek.  He was called up on 20th November 1915 and went to Portsmouth for training, then fought in France from 15th June 1916.  Lawrence was injured on 30th September 1916, and eventually discharged on 20th February 1919.  His injury was the result of slipping whilst firing a cannon, which caused his foot to be run over by the cannon as it was propelled backwards by the force.  He received a weekly allowance from 21st February 1919 in recognition of his injury, although the decision was to be reviewed in 26 weeks.  He married Winifred Jackson, in 1923 and moved to 4 Huddersfield Road, Barnsley, where he was a Bank Accountant in 1939.  His wife died in Bridlington in 1957, and Lawrence passed away in Scarborough.
