Story
Lance was the first child of John Thomas Thompson (1865-1940) and Mary Hannah Hartley (1869-1895). His parents married in Leeds, and Lance was born on Butt Lane, Kippax (pictured below). He was baptised as Lancelot on 2nd July 1890 in Kippax, and then the family moved to Durham, which was the home town of Lance’s father. In 1911, Lance was lodging at 176 Staffordshire Row, Sacriston, Durham, whilst working as a coal miner. He enlisted with the 7th (Service) Battalion of the Border Regiment on 1st September 1914 in Gateshead. On 17th October 1914, during his training, he was found guilty of being drunk and exhibiting disorderly conduct at the Garrison. His punishment was to be permanently assigned the rank of Private. Lance was 5ft 4½ inches tall, and went out to France on 13th July 1915 as part of the British Expeditionary Force. Whilst on leave, he married Sarah Ann Etherington in Durham on 11th November 1915, and returning to France, he transferred to the West Riding Regiment. Lance left the Army on 14th January 1919, resumed coal mining, and had six children before he passed away at the age of 56.
