Born: 16th August 1891. Died: 29th October 1961
Story
John was one of eight children born to Robert Knowles (1860-1930) and Mary Ann Collinson (1858-1919). He was born on Hopewell Terrace, and baptised on 13th April 1892 at the Wesleyan Chapel by Rev. He was mentioned as an early volunteer in the War effort, but it is not known in which regiment he served. During the War in 1917, he married Mary Ellen Davies in Pontefract, and they continued to live in Mary’s home town of Pontefract after the War, with John working as a Colliery Clerk. They had two children: Joan on 16th February 1921 and Conrad on 30th November 1925. John passed away at the age of 70 at Chy-an-Brea, Wheal Speed Road, Carbis Bay, St. Ives, Cornwall.
Private Herbert Liversedge
Born: 22nd July 1896. Died: 1969
Story
Herbert was also mentioned as an early volunteer in the War effort, but it is not known for certain in which regiment he served. He was the son of James Liversedge (1869-1943) and Lavinia Goodall (1871-1943). The family lived at 2 Top Row, Great Preston, and by the age of 14, Herbert was a Pony Driver at the pit. After the War, Herbert returned to Great Preston, and lived at 15 Side Row. He does not appear to have married, and by 1939, he was a patient at the Storthes Hall Asylum in Kirkburton (below), which was about to become the West Riding Pauper Lunatic Asylum. Herbert passed away at the age of 73 in Wakefield.
