Story
Before the War, John was a collier at Allerton Pit. He married Lily Green on 6th August 1917. They had one son together, who was also named John Robinson, and was born after his father’s death on 5th March 1919, but died the same day. Lily re-married Ernest Shackleton in 1921, and passed away on the 30th May 1946, aged 49.
1st Battalion
August 1914: in Lichfield, the 1st Battalion was part of 18th Brigade in 6th Division. It moved on 7 August to Dunfermline then six days later to Cambridge, before landing at St Nazaire (France) on 10 September 1914. Numerous battalions of The Prince of Wales’s Own (West Yorkshire Regiment) were serving at Neuve-Chappelle, Loos, the Somme, Passchendaele, Ypres, Marne, Arras, Cambrai and Gallipoli. At its peak The West Yorkshire Regiment numbered 37 battalions, 66 Battle Honours were bestowed and four Victoria Crosses were awarded.
John is buried in the St Souplet British Cemetery, Nord, France (below):
