Gunner John Martin

Royal Garrison Artillery, Service no. 27567

Story

The only evidence we have that John Martin enlisted in the First World War is his Kippax marriage certificate from 25th January 1919 (below), but the details do not match any surviving army records  Seasalter is down in Kent.

However, there was a John Martin born in Kippax in 1890 to Robert and Annie Martin, who moved to Market Weighton.  John’s bride would appear to be Sarah Jane Martin who was baptised in Kippax on 28th February 1883 to William and Hannah Martin, so they look to have taken 3 years from Sarah and given them to John to close the age gap.  After the War, John and Sarah had a son William Martin on 5th December 1923, and the couple had moved to 5 Railway Cottages, South Milford by 1939, where John was working as a Railway Shunter for North Eastern Railways.  John’s date of birth is given as 27th March 1888, whilst Sarah’s is 28th January 1888.  John and Sarah passed away in South Milford (below).  Just to add to the confusion regarding their year of birth, this would imply John was born in 1887 and Sarah in 1886.
