Gunner John Henry Taylor

Royal Field Artillery ‘B’ Battery, 153rd Brigade, Service no. 34612

Eldest son of Mr. William Taylor and Ann Agnes Sparling of Butt Hill, Kippax

Died 11th March 1917, aged 25

Story

Before the war, Gunner Taylor worked at Ledston Luck Colliery and had been in the army since 1915.  Although unmarried, upon his death the army returned 7s 2d to Miss Winnie Gaskell, which was possibly another relationship cut short by the War.  On Sunday 29th April 1917, a service was held for Gunner Taylor at the United Methodist Chapel, with Rev J.W. Davis from Castleford leading the service and Mr W. Halliday playing the Dead March on the Organ before John’s parents and relatives.  John was an old scholar at the Sunday school and much respected.
