Private John Henry Dunwell

Army Service Corps, 4th Mobilization Company, Service no. 171091

Born: 15th September 1885.  Died: 16th November 1968

Story

John was the son of John Dunwell (1846-1914) and Sarah Ann Middleton (1844-1924).  Before the War, John worked as a Plasterer and was living on Well Lane.  He was 5 ft 5 inches tall, and served 213 days in the Army where he was a driver in the Mechanical Transport division.  However, he was discharged from the Army on 18th September 1916 as being medically unfit.  He had varicose veins in both legs, but his right leg in particular made it difficult for him to stand for a long period of time without pain, and John even had difficulty driving as a result.  After he was discharged, John married Ellice Myra Crossland on 15th September 1917 in Allerton Bywater.  After the War, he resumed working as a Plasterer, had five children, moved to 5 South View, Kippax and passed away aged 83.
