Private Edward Hazelgrave Bickerdike

King’s Own Scottish Borders, Service no. 20570

Story

Edward was the son of William Henry Bickerdike and Eliza Bickerdike, and was born 29th May 1887.  He was a coal miner before the War, and married Annie Mosby in Kippax on 25th October 1909.  Annie’s younger brother was James Albert Mosby, who was killed during the First World War, and is listed on the Kippax and Ledston Luck War Memorial.  Edward enlisted into the Army on 24th June 1915, and his army papers show that he was 5 ft 9½ inches tall, and was residing at Hanover Square.  He was discharged due to thigh injuries, and spent 174 days in Harehills Hospital in 1916 recovering from his injuries. 

After the War, Edward resumed work as a coal miner, and lived with wife Annie at 3 Hanover Place. Edward passed away in Leeds in 1975.
