Story
John was the eldest son of William Cowell (1891-1963) and Gladys May Walton (1892-1961), who married in Kippax on 11th April 1914. The family lived at 16 Cliff Crescent, and included John’s sisters: Mollie (1922-1982), who was the Kippax Rose Queen in 1936; and Kathleen (1917-1986), plus William (1929-2013) and James Henry Cowell (1924-1989) who also served in the War. John married Florence Joyce Atkinson in Kippax on 29th April 1941 (pictured above). They were both Elementary School teachers at Kippax. Both Mollie and Kathleen were Bridesmaids, and Mollie was a Bridesmaid again when Kathleen married 7 months later in January 1942 (pictured below). Florence’s parents lived at Low Lodge Kippax Park, and they held the wedding reception there. John also gave this address for correspondence on the Service Register in 1945. After the War, John and Florence lived at 76 Park Lane, Allerton Bywater. John passed away on 2nd July 1987, and Florence passed away on 26th April 2004.
