Ordinary Seaman John Buttree

Royal Navy

Born: 6th January 1923.

Story

John Buttree was the son of John William Buttree (1903-1970) and Amy Hudson (1904-1923).  John’s mother Amy died aged 20 from complications giving birth to him.  Her brother was Benjamin Hudson who had been killed during the First World War.  After the death of his mother, John lived with his father, and his paternal grandparents John Thomas Buttree (1868-1947) and Rachel Freeman (1872-1940).  John Thomas Buttree had served in Royal Army Medical Corps during the First World War.  Before the Second World War, the family lived at Moorgate, and John was working as a Tailor’s presser.  He joined the Royal Navy in 1941, and whilst serving in Bombay, India (pictured below), in May 1943, John met up with fellow Kippax villager Norman Bowers, who was a Leading Aircraftman in the Royal Air Force.  Three months later, whilst still in India, John also met Albert Collinson, who was serving in the Royal Artillery.

After the War, John married Joyce Cook (1925-1978) in 1946, and the couple left Kippax to live at 25 Oak Avenue, Garforth.  John passed away in February 1997.
