Gunner James Thomas Morton

Royal Artillery

Born: 10th June 1921

Story

James was the son of William Morton (1897-1976) who fought in the First World War and Lily Weighll (1896-1932, pictured below left), whose brother Edward Weighll also served in the First World War.  His parents married in Kippax on 2nd March 1918, and after Lily passed away, the family lived at 21 Cliff Crescent.  James’ sister Ellen Morton (1923-1982, pictured below right) also lived at the family home.

While serving in the Middle East, James met George Edwin Scown, who also saw Harold Batty, John Finneran and George Morley, and all four of the men lived on Cliff Crescent.  Kippax villagers developed a custom of ‘celebrating’ whenever they met in service.  After the War, James married Brenda Churm (1933-1995) in 1960, and passed away in Castleford on 18th April 1986.
