Private James Silverwood

Royal Army Medical Corps, Service no. 7796.

Born: 9th December 1894.  Died: 1966.

Story

Jim was the son of Samuel Robinson Silverwood (1862-1922) and Mary Baines, and was a coal miner who enlisted into the Army before the outbreak of War, on the 16th May 1914.  He was 19 years and 156 days old and was 5 ft 5½ inches tall.  Jim’s father looks to have made an application to the Army on 9th November 1915, to pay £5 to discharge James from service.  This appears to have been unsuccessful, as it was later reported that Jim had been taken to hospital, after sustaining a bullet wound to his jaw whilst serving in France.  At the end of the War, James married Edith Booth in 1919, returned to coal mining, and was living at Hollis Buildings, Kippax until 1934.  He then moved to 36 Dalton Road, Leeds, where he worked as an Engineer.  He passed away in 1966, in Leeds.
