Story
James Gordon Dare was born and raised in Castleford and Normanton. He was the son of Joseph Watson Dare (1882-1917), a dentist, and Lily Chamberlain (1888-1968), who married each other in 1913. James’ father was from Forfar, and fought in the First World War with the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, 1st/4th Battalion. He was killed in Ypres on 9th October 1917, and is buried in the Brandhoek New Military Cemetery, Belgium. Before the Second World War, James was lodging at 11 Jessamine Avenue, Leeds and was a Pharmaceutical Chemist, assisting Leeds University. During the War, he moved to 12 Bickerdike Terrace, and married Winifred Barbara Oldham in Kippax on 1st June 1942 (below). He was providing emergency medical services and First Aid, working for the Ministry of Health. After the War, James and Winifred moved to Brexdale Avenue, before emigrating to Australia, where James passed away in 1982 and Winifred in 2000.
