Story
The son of John Bailey and Ellen Smith, James was born in Kippax in 1889, but the family soon moved back to Staffordshire. In 1911, James was working as a coal miner and living at 32 Oxford Street, Longton, Staffordshire. James enlisted on 30th August 1914 in Stoke-on-Trent, and was reported missing on the 19th November 1916, before it was confirmed the same day that he had been killed in action. His father John received a payment of £7 4s on 19th January 1918 following his son’s death, and his mother Ellen received a further £9 10s on 8th November 1919, whilst living at 67 Meir View, Wharf Street, Longton.

18.09.1914 Formed at Lichfield as part of the Second New Army and joined the 57th Brigade of the 19th Division, before moving to Salisbury Plain, and then Bristol. In Feb 1915 the Battalion moved to Weston-Super-Mare and then Tidworth.
18.07.1915 Mobilised for war and landed in France. Engaged in various action on the Western Front including: The Action of Pietre (1915), The Battle of Albert, The attacks on High Wood, The Battle of Pozieres Ridge, The Battle of the Ancre Heights, The Battle of the Ancre (1916).
