Jack Sumpner

Merchant Navy

Born: 8th May 1913

Jack was born in Castleford and joined the Merchant Navy in 1932, as an engineer. During the war, he was in the Atlantic convoys. He was torpedoed three times. On the last occasion, he was in open water for seven days.

Jack was married to Daisy Hewitt of Kippax, on 5th February, 1945, at St. Mary’s Church, Kippax (pictured below), who also served in Munitions at Thorp Arch:

After retirement from the Merchant Navy in 1962, Jack worked at Hunslet Engine Company, Fowlers in Leeds, and Pollard Bearings, Pontefract. His last employment was engineer at Ledston Luck Colliery.

 The couple had one daughter, Susan, married to Peter Norton, and still living in Kippax.

 Jack passed away on 25th April 1977.
