Sergeant Hugh Sizen

Royal Air Force

Born: 15th March 1917.

Story

Hugh was not born in Kippax, but married Joyce Mary Richards (1920-2007) in Hull in 1941, and then they moved to Castleford.  He joined the R.A.F., and then Hugh and Joyce had a son, Hugh Richards Sizen in 1942, before they moved to Kippax.  On 1st June 1945, it was reported that Hugh would appear in an Army welfare film “Calling Blighty” in which soldiers were filmed taking it in turns to relay a message back to their family members in England.  Pictured below is a soldier from Leeds taking part in one such film.  Hugh gave a message for his wife who was living at Crosshill, and for his parents-in-law Mr Henry Richards and Mrs Hilda Mary Richards (née Teal).

After the War, Hugh and Joyce moved back to Hull, and had a daughter Glynis in 1948, before they went travelling.  On 6th February 1953, the family arrived back in Southampton on board the Stirling Castle Ship after travelling back from Durban, South Africa.  They returned to live in Hull, where Hugh passed away in 1994.
