Private Hugh Lambert

Royal Field Artillery, Service no. 32588

Born: 8th September 1896.  Died: 1989.

Story

Hugh was the son of Benjamin Lambert (1862-1924) and Harriet Raistrick (1863-1949).  His brother James Thomas Lambert also enlisted and survived the War.  Hugh was a Pony Driver in the pit before the War, and enlisted on the 22nd April 1915, along with Herbert Lowe, aged 18 years and eight months.  He fought in France in 1915, before spending the rest of the War (1916-19) in Mesopotamia. 

He returned from the conflict after being discharged from the Army on 5th June 1919, and lived at 55 New Street, Kippax, before he married Ethel May Stead on 11th June 1921 in Barwick.  The family lived at 232 Potterton Lane, Barwick in Elmet, and Hugh was a Colliery Hewer.  He passed away in 1989, aged 93.
