Signalman Horace Hazard

Story

Horace was born and raised in Armley, with his parents being Harry & Sarah Jane Hazard. He was living at 85 Bruce Street when he attested on 10th Dec 1915, and joined the 4th Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment after enlisting in York on 10th May 1916. he was 5ft 7 and weighed 112 lbs.  Horace transferred over to the 4/1st Field Company of the Royal Engineers as a Signalman and Sapper on the Railway Operating Division of the Royal Engineers.

After the War, Horace married Edith Smith in April 1922, which was extensively covered in the local press, and worked in Kippax as a Railway Signalman.  The couple lived at 9 West View after they married, before moving to 18 School Lane, Kippax in the 1940s.  Horace passed away in November 1998 aged 101.
