Story

Herbert and Wilfred were the sons of John William Carter, who was a farmer on Kippax High Street and Hannah Garlick.  They also had a brother Abraham Carter, who also enlisted, and won the Military Medal, but was killed 16th October 1918.  On 8th January 1915, it was reported that these three brothers from Kippax had enlisted:

Recruiting is proceeding slowly but surely in Kippax district, and it is now estimated that there are over 100 men from the village serving their country.  Mr. John Carter, farmer, of High-Street, has now three sons who have enlisted.  Abraham has joined the Grenadier Guards, Wilfred is in training at Harrogate with the West Yorkshires, and Herbert is with the Miners’ Battalion at Farnley Park, Otley.

Herbert Carter married Emma Smith in Kippax during the War on 16th June 1917.  In 1939, they were living at 218 Westfield Lane, with Herbert’s father-in-law Nelson Smith next door at 219.  Herbert named his first son Abraham in tribute to his late brother, and passed away himself in 1971, aged 80.

Wilfred married Doreen Bragg in Middlesbrough in 1931 and had a son Gordon on 18th August 1931.  Doreen was 21 years younger than Wilfred.  In 1939 Wilfred was living at 70a Union Street, Middlesbrough, working as a labourer on the roads.  He passed away on 15th April 1960 in Nunthorpe, Middlesbrough.
