Corporal Herbert Harry Cockerham

Born: 25th July 1894.  Died: 26th September 1974

Story

Herbert was born in Kippax and baptised in Allerton Bywater.  He was the son of Charles Cockerham and Jane Parker.  His cousin James William Cockerham, also enlisted, and was a prisoner of war in Germany.  Herbert was a butcher and lived at 1 Station Lane, Kippax.  He enlisted 5th January 1915, joined the 1st Salford Pals battalion, and was promoted to Corporal. 

Lancashire Fusiliers 15th Battalion

The Battalion underwent training in Conway, Ireland from 28th December 1914, and also trained in Catterick North Yorkshire from 21st June 1915.  They landed at Boulogne, France on 22nd November 1915.  They fought at Thiepval Ridge at the Somme on the 1st July 1916, which almost wiped out the Salford Pals.  The Battalion was reinforced, and in 1918 they were in action on the Somme, the Battles of the Hindenburg Line, and the Final Advance in Picardy.  During the War, Herbert was shot in the left ankle, which left him with a scar and a slight limp.  He was discharged 21st September 1919, and married Beatrice Alice Plows in Kippax on 22nd May 1920.  During the Second World War, he served as an ARP warden, and in 1956, he was living at 28 High Street.  Herbert passed away aged 80 in 1974 at 11 Leeds Road, and left £13,243 in his estate.
