Gunner Henry Prince

Story

Henry was baptised in Kippax on 19th September 1886, and was the son of Josiah Prince (1848-1921) and Sarah Bickerdike (1849-1907).  Henry married Mary Florence Firth on 20th July 1907 in Kippax, and the couple lived in Great Preston in 1911, with Henry working as a coal miner.  The couple had a son Jesse on 10th September 1907.

Henry enlisted in the Army on 8th October 1915, and signed a letter stating he was willing to undergo dental treatment.  He was living on Leeds Lane, Kippax, and served in France from 5th March 1916 then Italy and suffered a gunshot wound to the back, although the injury was assessed by the medical team as slight.  Henry, who did not claim to have suffered injury when discharged, was 5 ft 4 inches tall, and gave his address as Pityard Cottages, Great Preston, which was the address of his father-in-law, George Firth.  Henry was given 2 days’ field punishment on 11th April 1917 for neglect of duty, and was admitted to hospital on 18th August 1917 suffering with dysentery and tuberculosis.  He left the Army on 14th February 1919 and returned to Coal Mining.  His son Jesse passed away in 1924, aged 17.  Henry passed away at the age of 65, whilst living at 3 Rodger’s Fold, Kippax, and was buried on 17th December 1951.
