Story
Son of Benjamin Batty and Eliza Kemp, Henry was born at Fenton Square, Kippax in 1881. The family moved to Swillington in 1889. Henry’s father passed away in 1912, and Henry moved to Asfordby, Leicestershire. He enlisted with the Royal Leicestershire Regiment in Melton Mowbray. The badge of the Regiment is a Royal Bengal tiger, awarded for service by the Regiment in India.
Royal Leicestershire Regiment, 6th Battalion
August 1914: The 6th Battalion of the Leicestershire Regiment was raised at Leicester as part of Kitchener’s First New Army and joined the 9th (Scottish) Division.
April 1915: The 110th Infantry Brigade of the 37th Division was composed of the Leicestershire Regiment 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th Territorial Battalions of the Regiment.
29th July 1915: The Division proceeded to Tilques, France.
7th July 1916: They transferred with 110th Brigade to 21st Division, and won great acclaim by their brilliant attack on the Bazentin-Le Petit wood and village in the Battle of the Somme, taking the village at 7:30am on 14th July 1916.
Private Henry Batty is listed on the Swillington War Memorial (below), and is commemorated at the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, Roclincourt, where he is listed as the: Son of Benjamin and Eliza Batty, of Blackwells, Swillington, Woodlesford, Leeds.
