Private Harry Stanley Harrison

Born: 27th June 1910

Story

Harry Stanley Harrison was the son of Stephen Hedley Harrison (1870-1925) and Sarah Jane Dunwell (1873-1935), who married in Kippax on 16th June 1894.  Harry was born on Well Lane, but the family moved later to 2 Chapel Lane.  After Harry’s parents had both passed away by the time Harry was 25, he lived with his elder brother John William Harrison (1894-1958) and his wife until the War.

Harry was based in Gibraltar during the War, which had a number of Kippax Villagers who encountered each other while they were stationed there.  Harry met Leonard Wilson, Elvin Smith, Fred Adams and Frank Sutton all in Gibraltar in 1943.

Gibraltar was an important strategic location during the War.  In November 1942, General Eisenhower set up his headquarters in Gibraltar prior to Operation Torch, which was the plan to capture French North Africa and join up with Bernard Law Montgomery’s army which was defeating Rommel in Egypt, clearing the Germans and the Italians from the African continent.

Harry passed away in 1968.
