Corporal Harry Gilpin

Born: 12th March 1912.

Story

Harry Gilpin was the son of Henry Edwin Gilpin (1885-1954) and Maud Elizabeth Coleman (1882-1974) who married in 1907.  Harry married Rose Violet Dent (1912-1990) on 15th December 1934 at Salem Chapel, Hunslet Lane, which was also the venue for the birth of Leeds Utd football club on 17th October 1919.  Harry was a Commercial Clerk, and lived at 16 Strathmore Terrace, Harehills, before he moved to Addinson Place, Dewsbury.

Harry kept photographs and newspaper clippings from his service in Iceland, which were passed to his youngest son Eric Gilpin (1944-2010).  Eric’s widow, Rita, lives at Hopewell Terrace, Kippax, and has kindly allowed her father-in-law’s memorabilia to be displayed here.  If Harry served on the Ark Royal, he may have met a Kippax villager George Cyril Hulme, who was serving on HMS Ark Royal when it was torpedoed.

Harry passed away in 1990.
