Story
Born 30th March 1891, Harry was the son of Abraham Armitage Ackroyd and Sarah Elizabeth Parker. Living at 43 Brunswick Road, Pudsey, Harry worked as a Doffer at a Worsted Mill. He married Edith Maude Hall in Pudsey on the 1st February 1913, and they had a son Arthur Ackroyd (1917-1998). Harry’s younger brother Ben Ackroyd (19th April 1897 – 20th November 1917) had already been killed in action, a Private also in the Prince of Wales’ Own (West Yorkshire) Regiment, 2/6th Battalion, Service no. 29495, and had been laid to rest at Rocquigny, Picardie, aged 19.

Harry, who was part of the Leeds Pals Battalion, died whilst being held as a prisoner of war, and is buried at the Pont Sur Sambre Cemetery. £26 1s 6d was paid by the army to Harry’s widow Edith, following her husband’s death. Harry is the grandfather of Barbara Ambler, and great grandfather of Philip and Dawn Ambler, all living in Kippax.
Another brother, Lawrence Ackroyd, survived the War, and passed away in 1987, aged 100. Harry’s detention paper in the German detention camp is shown below:
