Private Harold Fairburn

Machine Gun Corps, 4th Battalion, Service no. 186433

Born: 18th July 1899.

Story

Harold was baptised in Kippax on 9th August 1899.  Only his mother’s name, Hannah Fairburn (1876-1931) was listed, however Hannah married John Dickinson (1875-1913) in Kippax on 30th October 1899, so it is likely that Harold’s father was John Dickinson, pictured below with Hannah Fairburn:

In 1911, the family were living at 16 Hollinghurst, Allerton Bywater, but moved to 3 Warrington Row, Kippax.  Harold was 5 ft 5 inches tall, and enlisted on 29th April 1918.  Harold did not serve abroad, he spent seven months training before leaving the Army on 11th January 1919.  He did fall foul of army discipline when, on 29th October 1918 at Rugeley Park, he was confined to barracks for four days for ‘irregular conduct’.  This was defined as ‘breaking wind when on parade and causing a joke to be made of it.’

After the War, Harold married Doris Roberts in 1943, and the couple lived at 1 Birch Grove, Kippax.
