Story
Harold born in Glasshoughton, and was the son of Hemingway Clayton, who was originally from Carlton, and Mary Ann Watson, who was from Burton Salmon. The family moved to Brigshaw, Allerton Bywater, but Harold’s mother passed away in 1909, and Hemingway brought the family to Kippax, where they lived at Hopewell Terrace. Harold was employed by L.J. Gallagher of Castleford, and he was a miner.
Harold enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery, and joined the Front Line in March 1915. During the War, whilst Harold was on leave, he married Julia Parker in Kippax on 9th September 1917, and then returned to the front line. Shortly after, on 26th October 1917, Harold was reported to have been badly wounded in the head, back and left arm.
Harold survived his injuries, and after the War, he moved to 25 Primrose Avenue, Tadcaster. In 1939, he gave his occupation as an Ex Haulage Contractor, and during the Second World War, he acted as a Watchman over houses, and was noted as an R.F.A pensioner. His father Hemingway remained living in Kippax, at 24 Sandgate Terrace, where he passed away in 1948. Harold passed away in 1970.
