Born: 16th June 1890. Died: 1973
Story
Gresham, known as Leonard, was the son of Gresham Jackson (1861-1934) and Clara Simpson (1866-1929), and he was baptised in Kippax on 13th July 1890. He was living at Simpson Place, Station Road, working as a Joiner like his father, when he married Sarah Ann Anderson in Allerton Bywater on 3rd February 1912. They had three children: Muriel who died in infancy in 1913, Frederick in 1914 and George on 9th April 1927. Leonard was 5 ft 8 inches tall, and had become a colliery engineman when he was called up on 28th May 1918. He did not serve overseas, but was absent for 4 days in Rugeley, which cost him 2 days’ pay, and was absent from his Company Officers’ Parade at 12 noon 21st July 1918, so he was confined to Barracks for 2 days. Leonard was transferred to the 2nd Battalion after the War on 26th July 1919, and left the Army on 12th September 1919. After the War, the family lived at 7 Station Road, and Leonard was a Colliery Byeworker, before they moved to 71 Station Road. Leonard passed away at the age of 83.
