Lance Corporal George Hick

Hampshire Regiment, Service no. 18084

Born: 9th December 1897.  Died: 1975.

Baptised in Kippax on 6th January 1898, George was the son of Allan Hick (1865-1945) and Sarah Byers (1868-1933), one of 11 children born to the couple (pictured below at the home, 4 Park Place, Kippax).  Before the War, George was a miner at the Haigh Moor Colliery, Allerton Bywater, and enlisted in May 1915. 

George was promoted to Lance Corporal and from 31st October 1915, he fought in the Balkans, including Dardanelles, known as the Battle of Gallipoli (below).  He then served in France from September 1916.  George was posted as missing in action on 23rd April 1917, but survived the War, and returned home to marry Amy Sarah Atkinson in Allerton Bywater on Christmas Day 1919.  George passed away at the age of 77.
