Private George Goodall

Yorkshire Hussars (Alexandra Princess of Wales Own) Regiment, 8th Battalion, Service no. 28701

Son of William Goodall and Rebecca Annie Northorp, Mount Pleasant, Kippax

Killed in action 20th September, 1916, aged 23.

Story

A letter in the local newspaper said that William Goodall had received news that his youngest son had been killed in action on 16th September 1916. The news was conveyed by Lieut. R F Wilson, who stated that he had been killed by a shell-burst. He added: “Your son was deeply regarded by all his comrades and by myself, in whose platoon he was. I can assure you, you have our deepest sympathies in your great bereavement, and your debt to the Germans will be repaid by us at the first opportunity.”

Before the War, Private Goodall had worked at Allerton Pit as a banksman. He had enlisted 9 months before his death, which took place in the attack on Serre.  He is buried in the Serre Road Cemetery, Somme, France, plot 1V.J.29:
