Story
George was born in Tadcaster, the son of Maria Stead (1864-1922) who married Alfred Webster after George was born. They moved to Kippax, and George married Emma Heckingbottom in Kippax on 26th October 1907, and they had a son William Stead in 1910, who served in the Second World War. The family were living at 8 New Street Kippax before the War, and George was a coal miner. He enlisted in the Army, and was sent to France on 25th September 1915, serving with the Royal Ambulance Brigade. He was present at the landings in Dardanelles, and served in Gallipoli.
After the War, George returned to coal mining. His wife Emma passed away in 1948, and George lived at 12 Well Lane Kippax, before he passed away in 1963.
