Sergeant George Daniel Mackintosh

Story

Known as Danny, Sergeant Mackintosh was the son of James Mackintosh (1884-1945) and Sarah Ann Smith (1889-1916), who married in Kippax on 30th January 1912.  Danny married Jane Hope in Kippax in 1938, and they lived at 7 Carter’s Yard, School Lane during the War, and he was employed at Ledston Luck Colliery.  Danny became a sergeant in the Royal Artillery, and manned Anti-Aircraft guns in Egypt.  He served at the Battle of El Alamein (pictured below on July 12, 1942, 25-pounder guns of the 2/8th Field Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery, in action on the coastal sector near El Alamein):

Later in the War, Danny came back to RAF Leeming, before finishing his military service in the Territorials.  After the War, Danny returned to Kippax.  Their daughter Diane had been born in 1942, and son Ralph was born in 1947.  Danny continued to work as a Winder in Ledston Luck Colliery (pictured in action below).  His wife Jane passed away on 28th February 1985, and Danny passed away the following year on 23rd August 1986:
