Story
George worked as a shoe finisher before the war, and lived at 11 Temple View Terrace, Richmond Hill, Leeds, after marrying Marjorie Fletcher in 1937.
George joined the 96th Anti-Aircraft Regiment, which was among the new units raised in the Spring of 1939, and assisted with both the Battle of Britain and the Blitz, as his unit had responsibility for the air defence of Leeds (pictured below) and Sheffield, before it moved overseas. George’s service with the colours lasted six years, and he was on active service in many parts of the world, receiving the 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal and the War Medal 1939-45. Later in life, George moved to 41 Mount Pleasant until his death in 1985 aged 73.

George’s youngest son, Steve Costello, of Kippax attended all the Commemoration days, and brought arrays of memorabilia for the displays.
